Nature excursions

General Information

Ecological excursions are available for visitors in Polistovsky Reserve. All of them provide opportunities to explore wild nature and learn about the Reserve's natural ecosystems.
Visiting the Reserve is possible only with a guide and in compliance with the rules and regulations. 
After the excursions you can rest in comfortable guest house, taste herbal tea and traditional pies or order traditional Russian dinner prepared by local people in Tsevlo village, and buy souvenirs with the Reserve's logo.

Plavnitskoe Bog

Excursion starts in Tsevlo village (35 km from Bezhanitsy - where the visitor center and reserve's headquarters are located).     
The main goal of this trail is to introduce visitors to the variety of bogs in our Reserve. 
The excursion starts at the edge of the bog in 8 km from Tsevlo village. You can get there by the reserve's off-road vehicles.
You'll find yourself surrounded in the bog kingdom with its sphagnum moss, bogbean that warns travellers about possible danger, sundew - a predatory plant, wonderful bog orchids, and many other interesting plants.
The trail goes through 2 mineral islands: Spruce island where a wild forest from a fairy tale grows, and Pine island where you will find a relict horsetail that was exported to European beauty salons in 19th century. 
You will see some bear tracks, "witch's broom", chaga mushroom, and listen to the birds' songs.
The guide will tell you about the grand glacier more than 1 km thick and its role in the formation of Polistovo-Lovatskaya raised bog system, and plants that appeared here because of glacier era.
At the viewpoints you wil be able to enjoy the view of Plavnitsa river valley - favourote nesting place of semi-aquatic birds. 

Preliminary arrangements are necessary to schedule an excursion. They are organised from April to November for the groups of 2-12 people. The price is 720 roubles (10 Euro) per person.

Mossmen Route

Excursion starts from Gogolevo village (65 km from Bezhanitsy - where the visitor center and reserve's headquarters are located).

The trail begins in the buffer zone of the Reserve at Khlavitsa river in the former village Obolonje, and then goes to the North-West through the overgrown meadow, birch forest, and then mixed forest. Here you can experience the gradual forest restoration after being impacted by humans. 
While hiking the trail, you will cross the ornithological route where reserve's specialists conduct annual bird monitoring. There will be a stop at the large rock brought here by the glacier, and the guide will tell you about the last glacier period and modern relief of the Reserve. 
After going through the boulder rock surrounded by black alder forest, the trail turns back to river and crosses a transitional bog, where you can see its typical flora. In the middle of the trail there is a picnic area with a campfire where you can have a rest. 
The trails ends at Aniskin farmstead where you'll find the remains of the household buildings, a pond and a garden, and learn about the lifestyle of local people who inhabited this area in the past. 

Preliminary arrangements are necessary to schedule an excursion. They are organized from April to November for the groups of 2-7 people. The price is 480 roubles (7 Euro) per person.

From the Bogs to the Ocean

Excursion starts in Tsevlo village (35 km from Bezhanitsy - where the visitor center and reserve's headquarters are located).

This boat route connects 4 lakes and goes along the territory of the Nature monument "Polisto Lake". During this excursion you can repeat the route that every rain droplet overcomes from the bog to the ocean. You'll learn about the power of water - which is necessary for the nature, but which can be so destructive at the same time.
The excursion starts at the picturesque place in Tsevlo village, where there was the richest manor of Pskov region in the 18th century (it belonged to Krinitsyny family).The guide will tell you how nature created these landscapes throughout the years, and explain about the overgrowing process and fires that can occur here.
You'll see and hear various birds, such as curlew and ducks, and may even see some species that are included in the Red Book of Russia (fish hawk and black stork).    
Being in a boat, you'll have an opportunity to experience the raised bog, and at the estuary of Stradnitsa river you may find a beaver and learn about a beaver family. You will also learn where and when the fish goes to spawn from the beautiful Polisto Lake. At the end of the tour you will be at the only place in Pskov region where freshwater herring lives. 

Preliminary arrangements are necessary to schedule an excursion. They are organized from April to November for the groups of 2-5 people. The price is 840 roubles (11 Euro) per person.

By the Beaver's Path

Excursion starts in Gogolevo village (65 km from Bezhanitsy - where the visitor center and reserve's headquarters are located).

The beaver is the Polistovsky Reserve's oldest inhabitant. He is a skillful builder and agile swimmer. The "By theBeaver's Path" tour passes through meadows and forests in the reserve buffer zone. There is an opportunity to see with your own eyes the beavers' lives in the wilderness and their impressive buildings and waterworks. Moose, wild boars and bears trails are also available for viewing.

This tour is under construction now.

The Snowshoe Walk

Excursion starts in Tsevlo village (35 km from Bezhanitsy - where the visitor center and reserve's headquarters are located).

The Snowshoe Walk is a route for those who love marshes and wildlife. It's a possibility to feel alone within the huge Polistovo-Lovatskaya bog system, away from all people, roads and civilization. The length of the routes varies from 2 to 12 kilometers and is determined by the willingness and capacity of visitor.

Total time for the tour is from 2 to 6 hours.
The tour is conducted by appointment for groups of 2 to 12 people. The cost of the tour for a group is 2000 rubles (27 Euro).

In the Summer:

We invite you to visit the snowshoe ecological route in the Summer. Summer makes a journey through the swampy tracts considerably easier. There is the option of either just walk through the bog or to organize a trip to the primary lake. Second option is supposed to be an extreme kind of tourism.
In the realm of bogs you can see the following: multicolored carpet of sphagnum moss, three kinds of sundew, different types of marshes with some kind of plants as indicators, small and prickly pines and fragrant wild rosemary.
Tours are accompanied by an employee of the reserve.

In the Autumn:

Tourists are invited to make a walk through the wild Polistovsky bogs accompanied by a guide. You can literally feel what it is like when there is no ground under your feet, go to the mineral island in the middle of the bog and cam even reach the reserve's shoreless lake.

In the Winter:

This is the first winter route appeared in the Polistovsky reserve. We invite wildlife lovers to visit the fabulous snowshoe journey on the snow-covered bog. Accompanied by a guide you will visit marshes which almost never freeze and admire their unique winter landscapes.
In the realm of winter bogs you can see the following: evergreen shrubs, sleeping under the snow; red cranberries, hidden in the frozen moss; snow crystals which like white roses adorn the rare thin birch. Along the way you will come across the Polistovsky reserve's cautious inhabitants' tracks. You will be able to choose an optimum distance of the route (from 1 to 12 km), depending on your strength and capabilities. Also you can independently select the main subject of interest: the highest point of the Polistovsky reserve - the mineral island Gorodok, the beaver hut, or a snowshoe walk on the snow-covered bog.

The Cranberry Tour

The tour starts in the village Tsevlo ( 35 km from Bezhanitsy ) .
We invite you to participate in a cranberry tour. You will visit the vast swamps of the Pskov region in waterproof boots, you will pass through the damp areas of the "scary" marshes , you will get carried away searching for hidden cranberries on the living moss carpet, while an employee tells you about the rich history and the benefits of the berries. And then , under the guidance of a local woman, you will learn to make a variety of delicious dishes from the berries you collected .
In the end of this trip, you will tour the village Tsevlo and will learn about the rich history of the once large, ancient village.
          
This event takes place from the second part of September  to November, by appointment only, for groups of 2-12 people. The cost of the tour for a group is 1400 rubles (19 Euro).
