Meeting in Tsevlo
On the 20th of October a meeting of the director and employees of Polistovsky National Nature Reserve with the local community and with the head of Administration "Polistovsky volost" Valery Mikhailov took place in Tsevlo village.
The Head of the Administration discussed construction of a pier and a garage for the boats that carry tourists with the reserve staff. The idea was that the staff of the reserve together with fishermen and boat owners from Tsevlo can equip two piers in order to use them together. A location for the piers was preliminarily selected on the shore of Tsevlo Lake. The reserve can provide building materials and hopes that the villagers will help in piers construction, which can begin in the next year.
At two master classes conducted on July 16 and July 17 in the village of Tsevlo in Polistovsky Reserve, local residents learned how to make soap under the guidance of Elena Shirinova from Moscow and shared experience in spinning with hand spindles and spinning wheels.
The lessons were organized with support from the FLEG II Program, under which the Bezhanitsky and Loknyansky raions of Pskov Oblast have become pilot sites to engage local citizens into ecotourism development as the alternative way of forest resources use for the sake of local economic growth.
On October 14, at two master classes in traditional Russian arts and crafts held in Polistovsky Reserve, three craftswomen taught the residents of the village of Zevlo the art of matting wool and making northern honey cakes called kozuli.
Elena Kondrashova and Yulia Orlova from St. Petersburg brought with them heaps of colored wool and demonstrated different techniques of working with it: wet and dry matting and creating beads, washcloths, toys, slippers, hot pads, brooches, earrings and key chains. All the participants in this master class had a chance to give matting a try and go home with a small souvenir made with their own hands.
A workshop “Support of Local Initiatives in Sustainable Ecological Tourism” was held in Polistovsky Reserve on July 4.
The head of Bezhanitsy district Anatoliy Trofimov, the head of Loknya district Nina Stepanova visited Polistovsky National Nature Reserve.
The meeting was dedicated to the Reserve’s experience in organizing ecological tourism and involving the locale people in work with tourists.
During the meeting the participants visited excursions, which were designed and implemented by the local people of Tsevlo village and the ecological rout “Plavnitskoe Bog”.
