Winter route accounting of animals in Polistovsky Reserve
Polistovsky Reserve employees conducted winter route accountings of hunting species of animals. Inhabitants of the protected area were counted by their footprints on 5 routes, about 15 km long each.
This year the accountings were held right after the formation of a stable snow cover, where it is possible to distinguish traces. The routes are located near the border between the bog and forest zone, because inhabitants of the reserve spend most of the time in winter there. Every year the routes stay the same, which allows to track changes in animal populations.
According to the method, specialists pass the routes on snowmobiles and note all the traces of hunting species of animals, and also note meetings of grouse birds (wood grouse, black grouse, hazel grouse and white partridge). This year all typical representatives of Polistovsky Reserve fauna - moose, foxes, wolves, raccoon dogs, hares; birds were also met several times.
After passing the routes, specialists estimate the population size of species inhabiting the protected area and draw conclusions about the stability of populations. According to preliminary estimates, this year in Polistovsky Reserve there are no negative changes in the quantity of accounted mammals and birds.
