Bird Day in Russia
International Bird Day is celebrated in Russia every year on the 1st of April. This holiday was firstly originated in Pennsylvania (United States) and then spread across the country and abroad. In our country, the International Bird Day started to be celebrated in 1999 on the initiative of the Russian Bird Conservation Union. The purpose of the Day is to draw public attention to the problems of preservation of endangered species of birds, and to provide suitable habitat conditions for all birds living next to us.
Polistovsky Reserve joins the celebration and recalls about the need to take care of birds and to protect them. Protected areas play the most important role in conservation of biodiversity, including birds, some species may feel comfortable, to nest and breed in safety only in National Parks and Nature Reserves. Polistovsky Reserve is one of the important bird areas of Russia; Polistovo-Lovatskaya raised bog system is the largest natural reserve for some endangered species of birds, including the Red Data Book ones.
We should add that not only the creation and activities of protected areas can help in the preservation of biodiversity. Everyone who cares about the fate of the birds can provide help for them by making feeders for wintering birds in the cold season, or build bird houses in spring - during their nesting time. Now it’s easy to find drawings and recommendations on making bird houses on the Internet, the main thing is to be careful and to follow all the requirements of their size and shape, so that the birds feel comfortable and safe to settle in such dwellings.
