World Wetlands Day
All over the world this day is celebrated since 1997 on the 2nd of February - the day of signing in Ramsar the "Convention on Wetlands" in 1971. The document was signed in order to protect territories of international importance as a habitat for aquatic and wading birds and ecosystems playing an important role in the stability of the entire biosphere.
To date, 35 areas in Russian have this international, "ramsar" status. In addition, there is a "Ramsar shadow list" - the list of wetlands that should be included to the main list in the future. One of these areas is Polistovsky National Nature Reserve - very important territory for many rare species of wading birds, as well as the valuable and fragile ecosystem - undisturbed raised bog.
Congratulations to all the readers and colleagues on the World Wetlands Day!
