October 2 - Board of Directors of the Association

Board of Directors of the North-West Association

The 20th jubilee Board of Directors of the Association of Protected Areas of the North-West region was held in September in Petrozavodsk on the base of Vodlozersky National Park. Participants recalled the days when the association was created and started its activity, the people who played an important role in the formation of this organization, and discussed actual issues of the Association. Also, new evidences of the Association members were solemnly presented to all who came.

Unfortunately, only 12 of the 24 members of the Association could present there, and this time the quorum was not met, but the preliminary decisions on some issues have been taken. The final vote should take place after the All-Russia Board of Directors in Vladivostok or online at aoopt.ru

Primarily a preliminary plan of activities for 2016 was developed. It was decided to hold the Board of Directors annually in February and in the coming year it will take place in the national park «Orel woodland». There are also other events planned for 2016: a workshop for security staff in March, a seminar on ecotourism in the national park «Paanajärvi» in September, a camp for children of employees of Association PAs in «Smolensk Lakeland» in July, and a workshop on the interaction with local community in Polistovsky Reserve in May.

They also discussed the rules of suspension of membership in the Association in case of non-payment of dues or non-participation in events. It was proposed to increase the membership fees and the Association insurance fund, created to help employees of protected areas in difficult life situations.

Another important issue was the admission of new member to the Association - Pechora-Ilychsky National Nature Reserve. This is one of the native Northwest territories, a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List «Virgin Komi Forests», and, according to the participants, it is necessary to accept it into ranks of the Association.

Also rotation of the president of the Association, which occurs once every 5 years, was discussed at the meeting. The general consensus was that the current president of the Association Alexander Kochergin perfectly copes with his duties in recent years and will continue his work on this honorary position.

The last item on the agenda was the resumption of the contest «Best in Profession» for the staff of PAs - members of the Association, which, unfortunately, was not carried out in recent years. Contests will be held for employees of law-enforcement, science, and ecological education and interpretation departments.

During the discussions, it was proposed to undertake a detailed analysis of the activities of the Association: to collect all the documentary resources of the 20 years of its existence to assess the results of the work and, may be, introduce some improvements in the future. It was also proposed that all directors and employees of the Association PAs should feel themselves like its full members: to speak on behalf of the Association, to feel the support of colleagues, to cooperate actively not only through chiefs, but also directly - at the level of deputy directors and specialists and, of course, to demonstrate the results of their activities within the Association.

After official events a small tour in the visitor center and the territory of Vodlozersky National Park was held : to a fire station and an administrative building in the village Kugnavolok, to Ohtoma cordon, to the settlement in the village Varishpelda and to Ilyinsky Monastery. Participants of the meeting also visited Kivatch waterfall located in the reserve of the same name.
