Lichen from Red Book in Polistovsky Reserve
In the beginning of September survival of reintroduced last year lichen Lobaria pulmonaria was monitored in a buffer zone of Polistovsky Reserve. This lichen is included to the regional and the Russian Red Book. In the early 20th century, it it was often found around Polistovo-Lovatskaya bog system, and in many other areas of Pskov region. Lobaria pulmonaria was detected on the territory of our neighboring nature reserve "Rdeysky" but it doesn’t inhabit our territory.
in the zone of mixed forests Lobaria pulmonaria usually choose deciduous trees(oak, linden, maple) as a substrate, but it also can be found on old aspen. To return this lichen in place of its native habitat, in the last year planting material was imported from Central-Forest National Nature Biosphere Reserve, lichen was collected from a dying fallen aspen. According to the procedure, that is used successfully for reintroduction of Lobaria pulmonaria in other parts of the Pskov region, 28 specimens were planted on the trunks of black alder, aspen, maple and linden trees in the buffer zone of the reserve.
Small pieces of thallus (from 5 to 10 cm) is pressed against the trunk by a thin netting and fixed and stayed like this until lichen itself attach to the substrate.
This procedure has been carried out in October, 2014. And now, almost a year later, we found out how Lobaria pulmonaria has taken root in a new location. All samples are feeling good, but the most fortunate are lichens attached to the lindens and maples.
