Pskov schoolchildren got acquainted with Polistovsky Reserve
Yesterday, on the 21st of November, employees of Polistovsky Reserve conducted a lesson for students of the Ecological and Biological Center in Pskov. Listeners got acquainted with nature conservation in Nature Reserves and with interesting features of raised bogs.
About 40 people gathered at the lesson: from the second graders to high school students. They listened to presentations telling about the protected areas system of Russia, protected natural areas of Pskov Region and, in more detail, about Polistovsky Reserve.
The children got acquainted with the Reserve's work, with goals and tasks of the protected area, as well as with the nature of raised bogs: ecological functions of this unique ecosystem, its typical inhabitants - plants and animals. They talked more about birds, because Polistovo-Lovatskaya raised bog system is the largest natural reserve of some species of birds in North-West Russia.
The listeners had a lot of questions. They learned how bird countings are carried out, which migratory birds nest here, how cranberry yields are determined, which regime is acting on the protected area and much more.
At the end of the lesson, the children easily coped with the quiz “Nature Connoisseurs”, during which they consolidated their knowledge of Polistovsky and received memorable prizes.
Cooperation of Polistovsky Reserve with the Ecological and Biological Center will continue, in particular, during the spring break it is planned to hold a lesson for schoolchildren timed to the Bird Day.
