In the beginning of October, annual observation of the autumn migration of birds took place at the station of Polistovsky Reserve in the village of Ruchi. It was attended by employees of the protected area and volunteers-birdwatchers from among the teachers and graduates of the course BirdID.

Flocks of migrating greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) and taiga bean geese (Anser fabalis) became the main object of observations, but they also met a dunlin (Calidris alpina) – rare wader, listed in the Red Data Book of Russia, and a horned lark (Eremophila alpestris) – new species for Polistovsky Reserve.

The researcher of Polistovsky Reserve Oscar Sayfullin tells, “Migration observations were carried out for 7-8 hours every day. We photographed each passing flock, determined the species of geese and the number of individuals. This year, due to the warm weather and prolonged summer, the autumn migration takes place later than usual, but we managed to get the peak of the migration, and the accounting was as complete as possible.”

Migratory waxwings, bramblings, Eurasian skylarks and other small birds were also encountered during the observations.

Reference:

Autumn migration is the movement of migratory birds from nesting sites to wintering grounds. Autumn migration takes place in the reverse order: the birds arriving later than others fly away first (for example, swifts arrive at the end of May, and leave their nesting sites in July-August). In addition, young individuals of many species linger on the nesting sites for several weeks or even months longer than adults, with the result that the autumn migration is more extended in time than spring.
